Oil and trany fluid changes

Hello Subaru lovers.
I'm new Subi owner, just got my 2002 Legacy wagon GT with 95k miles and
thinking about oil and ATF changing.
any recomendation? some my friends do not recomend syntetic oil as long
as I dont know what oil has beeb used for past 3 years.
Any thoughts?
Any ATF recomendations?

TIA

I would go with Mobil 7500 in a 5w30. 7500 is a blend oil and is avail
at my local Wal-Mart. I would go with an OEM or PureOne oil filter. I
would do a Pan flush using a brand name Dexron 3 fluid. I like
Pennzoil Dexron but I'm sure any name brand is good. Ed

I always keep an OEM filter in the trunk for whenever I get an oil change...
Since it's cheap and easy (and more accepted for the warranty) I get my oil
changed at Wal-Mart or JiffyLube or wherever. I have found that they will
*tell* you that they have the right filter for your car, and indeed it will
fit, but it is less than 1/2 the size of the OEM job. Since I go more than
3000miles on an oil change (more like 6000, even though the book says 7.5K)
I want a beefier filter. They are still only like $6-7 from Subaru and they
always throw in the crush washer when I ask for it. Seems like a good way
to err on the side of safety. Many aftermarket filters for the WRX are much
smaller than OEM, which worries me (perhaps my fear is unwarranted, though).

Size doesn't correlate to surface area of the
filter media inside, as has been proven on
numerous "cut em open and measure em" webpages.

Newest Subaru OEM WRX filter is dimensionally
SMALLER than the one it replaced---to give more
clearance between filter can and headers.

You don't *really* take your car to WalMart or a
quick lube place for oil changes, do you?

Is switching for example from mineral oil to syntetic oil can coze
engine oil leaks? specially if engine got 100k already

This is one subject that is sure to get some hostile responses.
Everytime the subject of synthetic oil and especially the Amsoil brand
is mentioned, some so called experts come out of the woodwork. They
always run anyone down who promotes the use of Amsoil. Sure most are
dealers, it's a good way to get the best price on the best products.
Amsoil has been the leader since 1972. Their way of doing business lets
the every Joe have a chance to be in business . Amsoil is a small
company when compared to the big oil companys, but they have forced big
oil to compete. Look how Mobil 1 has finally been forced to offer
extended drain intervals. Also, consider how the car companies have been
coming around with extended intervals and how they are factory filling
cars with synthetic engine oils and gear lubes.
So, TIA, I would switch your Subie to Amsoil engine oil and your
transmission to Amsoil ATF. You will have the best protection available.
Also, sign up a dealer and get the best pricing. Anyone out there who
will not accept the idea that synthetics are superior to dino oil,
really has no clue about oils.
These same people who will probably attack me or any other Amsoil user,
probably are also still mad that George Bush was elected again. George
is President and Amsoil is "The First in Synthetics!"

I took my car (toyota corolla) to Walmart for an oil change ONCE. They
damaged my oil pan. Still don't know how they managed to do it. Good thing
was they replaced it , no charge.
Happy Trails
