oil consumption in the 4-cyl boxer engines

Looking to maybe purchase my first subaru. My oldest daughters father-in-law owns 2 Foresters. His daughters both own Subarus also. I have been told about the engine oil light coming due to low engine oil level.Is this issue real or is it hit or miss.

When you purchase one that is well maintained and carry on the maintenance, it will survive quite well.
If you purchase a used model, have a trusted technician inspect the vehicle from top to bottom and request if possible, the maintenance records.
Consider "low oil levels" as abuse and laziness from the operator.
