Cause of oil leak

Hello, I am attempting to pinpoint the cause of an oil leak I have on my 1995 Subaru Legacy. The leak is on the lower front timing cover. I know that there should not be any oil within the timing cover itself, so I need to know what the other possibilities are before I attempt to fix it myself. This would be the first time doing mechanical work on a Subaru for me. I would also like to keep the expenses low. I know removal of the timing cover would require a few gaskets already. Any help and/or advice would be highly appreciated. Thanks

Use a dye that can be used with engine oil.
Clean off the engine, add the dye to the engine oil.
Wait for the leak to appear using a "black light" to identify the location of the leak.
