link between speedometer and transmission

might be a stypid question but...

is ther a link betwwen the speedometer and the transmission in my 98 legacy?

the other day theautomatic transmission did not want to shift into a higher
gear. while it did this i noticed the speedometer did not move, suggesting a
link. Is ther one?

There's a speed sensor on the transmission which is connected to the
speedometer by a small cable.
