Programming Homelink with rolling code garage door

I have searched YourTube, etc. and have been unsuccessful in programming my 2016 Forester Limited's Homelink button. I cleared any prior programming, hit the LEARN button on my GDO, and pushed button 1 down for 2 seconds and repeated three times. It won't program. Is there an interim step I am missing after I clear programming on all three buttons? Am I to first push button 1 down for some time to get it in a mode to accept the transmitted LEARN signal bedore I go push the GDO LEARN button? I know I only have thirty seconds to train the Homelink button, but nothing happens when I push the button # 1. I tried buttons 2 and 3 just in case, but I have the same problem.

Instruction manual says I am doing it right, but ask for your help to overcome my ignorance!
