We just picked up the above car from my FIL. It was an extra car since his
wife died. :-(

It has 44K miles. It's been garage kept, very lightly driven and has been
to the Subaru dealer
for EVERY scheduled maintenance, even oil changes since day one. I have all
the dealer
paperwork on all the services which were performed like clockwork.

The brakes need to be done but that's about it.

Since it's 10 years old should I have the timing belt and water pump changed
by the dealer?
If so, any idea what it'll cost to have it done at a dealer in upstate
NY/Middletown?

Why do the brakes need to be done? My pad lasted 80,000 + miles and
still had life remaining. My 2000 Forester has a 105,000 mile TB
replacement interval but, yours may be 60,000 miles. If your manual
says 60 K then you may want to do the TB only. If your book says
105,000 miles then forget it.

Because there's a pulsing/whirring when you brake.

It says 60K or 60 months. The TB broke on my 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe
last week. The engine was trashed as a result at 72K miles. <grrr>
