which subarus have use the same differential as my impreza?

Hi all

I have a '98 Impreza 2.0 GL automatic, and just having had the big 90k
service they have informed me that the differential needs
replacing/reconditioning. :-( as if the big service wasn't enough already
:-(

When I enquired, they agreed, it would be much more cost effective to get
one from a breaker, but that it would have to be off exactly the same
model/year/auto etc

They said it was possible the same differential was used in masses of
subarus, but without going through a parts book and cross matching they
didn't know.

Does anyone on this NG know which subarus I would be ok getting a
differential from or do i have to get one from the exact same model?

Having just gone through the big service I am extremely eager to try and
keep further costs down!!

Any help very gratefully received!!

Thanks

Charlie

As a start go to www.subaru.com with your year, model, trans type and the
complete VIN number. What makes you think the differential is bad? Is it
noisy or did the oil change have allot of metal shavings in it or what???
Repost back to this tread when you get any good information and good luck.

Hi Edward

Yhanks for your reply

Yes its making a noise. I had noticed a noise coming from the rear but
thought the brakes were low. (The brakes were fine)

They changed the oil as part of the service, but they say the noise is still
there and needs further examination to determine which bits need replacing.

I have had a similar experience some years ago with a mitsubishi automatic
gearbox when "a quick look to see the extent of the damage" became a
complete rebuild and a four figure sum, when a gear box from the breaker and
a quick in and out woud have been a third of the price, but "once its on
the ramp"....................

I don't like the idea of going down that route again!

I have filled out the details on subaru.com but I am in the UK so don't know
if it'll like that.

I pick up the car tomorrow so will ask about metal in the oil. Is there
anything else you recommend I ask them?

Cheers

Charlie

The US site doesn't allow me to register being in the UK and the UK site
does not offer that service.
