Forester gas tank slow to fill up

My recently purchased 2000 Forester S with 167K miles takes forever to gas up every time at all gas stations. I have to hold the gas pump fuel lever at the barest of minimum settings or else it clicks off. I look inside the fuel pipe on the car and see no obstructions besides the flapper valve that seems to be from the factory. I hold the fuel pump nozzle firmly pushed all the way in to the fuel pipe (due to all the pumps in Washington state that I've seen have the spring loaded cover around the outside of the filler nozzle to limit fuel vaper emissions).

Any ideas how to get this baby fueled up faster?
