Windshield replacement

Just something for people to think about:

I have a 2005 Outback Sport, a rock hit my windshield and I had to have it
replaced. The glass place got the replacement windshield from PPG. While I
was driving home from the place I tried to adjust the rear view mirror and
it cam off in my hand. I went back to the place and we tried to figure out
what the problem is. The bracket that the mirror slides into is already
attached to the windshield when they get them from PPG so it is not the
original bracket. The installer got my old bracket and we compared it to
the new one, visually there seems to be no difference, however when you
slide the mirror onto the old bracket you can hear a definite click as it
locks into place, on the new one you never get that click.

They ordering another windshield today and are planning to test the mirror
on this windshield before they do the replacement again. It may just be a
bad bracket was on the first windshield.

Anyway, if you have to get your windshield replaced really check out the
mirror!

Wouldn't it be easier to remove the mirror and just get the "button"
replaced with a better fitting OEM one? You might even consider an
entire rear view mirror assembly. A simple OEM quality mechanical
rear view mirror assembly costs less than $25.

Of course I've never tried removing the "button" before, although I
had one fall off from my replacement (Pilkington) windshield. I
scraped off all the adhesive to the bare metal, cleaned off the
(windshield) button mount and button with acetone, and glued it on
with Loctite rear view mirror adhesive. It's a copper based adhesive
that works as well as OEM as long as it's prepped properly.

The mirror is the one with the auto dimming and compass display built in, I
looked and a replacement is around $100. The button part does not look
removable, it seems to be all one piece.

If the new windshield mirror mount does not work any better than the current
one, they are going to try to get the mount off of the window and use the
original one. I am surprised that the mirror did not fit, you would think
they (PPG) would have tested the bracket thoroughly. I am thinking I somehow
just got a bad one...
