Issues with spark plug fit

2012 Subaru Forester X Premium AWD (4 Cylinders 2.5L MFI DOHC 152 CID)
Can get to the plugs (eventually), but the 16 mm and 14 mm thin wall sockets won't grip the shell. Am I looking at this wrong, it seems like it has some sort of jacket around it. Here is a pic that may explain it better.

Sorry, but another question. I replaced my crankshaft and camshaft position sensors. Now the hard crank is longer than before. It usually takes 2 or 3 attempts to start. I suspect I need to reset the ECU. Does that sound right? I don't want to do the negative battery cable disconnect method and will have it cleared with a good OBII scanner.
 
Humm... I've read you have to undo motor mounts and jack the engine out, up. One side at a time.
Just replacing a position sensor should not require any specific reset.
Perhaps try disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes.
