Slight amount of smoke from engine area

Folks,
Just bought a 2nd hand 1996 Subaru Legacy 250T. All seems to run very
nicely, however I have noticed that there seems to be a small amount of
smoke coming from the engine bay. Not a huge amount, but enough to see
coming through the sides of the hood.

Various people have mentioned that it's likely to be some spilt oil or more
likely a silicon spray burning off. Any thoughts on this? The engine seems
to be running fine, no over heating or anything.

My current approach is to keep an eye on it and see if it goes away over
the next few days - or should I have it straight into the garage for a check
over, despite the fact it's just had a full service?

Cheers
Rupert

Hi,

Is the engine clean enough to see oil leaks? If not, you might want to
give it a good bath so you can watch for leaks. Seems the places Subies
are most prone to leak are in areas where the oil drips down onto the
exhaust system, causing the smoke and hot smells. Cam seals are
especially problematic on mine... oil leaks at the cam, runs down inside
the cover, exits far away from the source, directly onto the exhaust.

Rupert,
first check the front halfshafts. When the boots sorrounding the
universal joins on these break the grease they contain is flung out &
some can land on the exhaust pipe, causing smoke.

Then check for leaks around the crankshaft & camshafts. The seals on
these tend to start to leak around 80K miles, & the oil that seeps out
can be blown back onto the exhaust, causing smoke.

Let us know what you find

Wait for "small amount of fire" from the engine bay...soon to follow.
"Normal" for a race/rally car.

Thanks for the replies - seems it was a side cover gasket that was leaking,
reseller is doing the repairs free.
