Am I missing something? I thought i would see what everyone else thought about this. Oil enters the oil filter through the small holes around the edge and passes through the anti-drainback disk. The oil then passes through the filter media, enters the center tube and
returns to the engine. So the question, is what keeps the oil from draining out of the filter when the engine is off. Which means the filter never has oil in it when you start the engine, and must refil every start. Sorry if this an old topic
 
I t would matter to people who fill their filters with oil before mounting them. Also what is the purpose of the anti-drain back valves if the filter is still going to
drain. Also if the oil filter is empty when the engine starts theres a slight delay in oil getting to the bearing when the engine starts. Which means the less starts the better. Another reason to get rid of the start-stop feature when you stop the car.
 
My $.02.

Fill time at startup is a second or three and there's quite a protective layer in the engine unless it has been sitting for a very long time. There isn't "no oil" on things like bearings. It doesn't take much to reduce friction, just a thin layer. Oil also does a lot of the cooling.

The ADBV keeps the oil in the filter when the engine is off.

There's also a bypass so that oil flows if the filter is clogged. Subaru oil filters are famous for one strict rule: a high bypass valve pressure of 23.2 psi. This releases oil to lubricate the engine if the filter gets clogged. Most standard car filters open at 10–12 psi. Using a low-pressure filter on a Subaru can dump dirty, unfiltered oil into your engine. You can see the problem with so many people using an aftermarket filter that physically fits but which does not match this spec.

Hope that this helps. Using a proper filter matters. Changing it on the recommended cycle is important. This isn't Subaru's cycle, but the filter makers cycle as materials and construction vary widely.

I wouldn't worry about your original concern at all.

I thought there was some kind of anti drain valve built into most oil filters. Good question. I’ll call my dealer advisor and ask.

If we knew why, we can provide info that might help. "Because" is a childish way to explain why one needs something.
