fuse for headlights and dashlights

I got a 2000 Legacy L wagon two weeks ago. Last night, I installed a
new stereo in it. I followed the directions that Crutchfield sent
along. Arrogantly, I skipped the step about disconnecting the battery.
Maybe I created a short. Now my taillights and dashboard lights don't
work, regardless of which position I try on the headlights switch. I
looked for a blown fuse, but I haven't found one. Anywhere else to
look? Thanks.

I'd recommend disconnecting your new radio leads and see if you can get the
lights to come back on. If they do, then you need to double check your
wiring. Pay close attention to "dimmer" leads.

Your local repair shop. You know, the one run by professionals. Just a
thought.

You bet. I'm bringing it in tomorrow morning. I guess I wasn't clear. I
was asking if there's something I can do myself before I give up.

No help for you, but just curious if Crutchfield supplied an adapter for
you, or if you had to splice the wires youreself?

They sent me an adaptor which plugs into the existing wiring, but I had
to splice that with the connector the stereo came with. I bought from
them a crimping tool and 20 crimpy things, which made that job easy,
though it took a while to crimp about 15 wires.

Relax. Open a beer. Sit back and wait until it is time to drive to the
repair shop. No use fretting over it.

Of course, if you are the type that finds relief by shouting out a five
minute chain of expletives, be my guest.

You bet there is! Go over those 15 or 20 crimp
connections you made, and make sure each and
every one is correct ;-)
