Cluth Life -- 2000 Legacy

Just wondering if any of you have had any clutch issues
in the standard transmission 2000 Legacys. Mine fell
out at 103 K and I had to get the clutch and the flywheel
replaced.

The clutch was begriming to show signs of slip at about
85 K and it when it finally went, in went in less than
1 mile!!

Any news would be appreciated as this is the first time
I have this problem in a Subaru. I have had them for
24 years now. This is the third. All were standard
transmission cars.

thanks

Anything over 36K miles would be considered normal. I have normally gotten
about 120K miles; I'm easy on a clutch. But, they work with friction, so
they will wear out eventually; just like brakes.

I always replace them at the first sign of slipping. That way you might get
away without having to replace the flywheel. If the pressure plate wears
enough you can get scoring on the flywheel and it is toast after that.

My 2000 OBW's transmission and clutch has been running fine, and now
it's nearly at 200K km (120K miles). I can't say that I love the clutch,
it's a little grabby in 1st and 2nd gear, but it's been like that since
I bought the thing. And it's not like I babied the clutch much either,
I've done a few things where I've smelled burning rubber, which i assume
was from the clutch. But still the clutch appears fine.

Hi,

It's very hard to determine what "average" or "good" clutch life is.
I've had a "poorly adjusted from the factory" clutch go out in 20k
miles. The longest I've personally driven a clutch was 189k miles--long
distance commuter--and it was working just fine when I sold the car. The
new owner "learned" to drive a stick on that car, and that clutch was
gone in probably less than 5k miles. My '90 Loyale was purchased at 209k
miles, and I replaced its clutch at 310k miles. When I took the old
parts to the dealer to match replacements, the parts guy looked at some
particular marks or numbers and told me it looked like I was probably
replacing the factory originals!

All those stories aside, years ago I heard one old "rule of thumb" was
that a clutch will generally last thru two sets of front brakes. Guess
that takes into account how much stop and go's involved? Using that rule
of thumb and my personal experience, I'd guesstimate most of MY cars
should go around 125-150k miles or so...

Thanks for all the replies. I am happy to learn that I was
not 'destroying' the clutch with my driving -- have driven
standard almost all my life but when I could not afford one
as a graduate student :) (But, I still think that that
Oldsmobile Cutlass was one of the best vehicles that
I have ever come across .... )

I guess it has been a good run and the new clutch
seems to tolerable, but a bit sticky.

Anyway, I appreciate Yosuf's comment. I have driven
Toyotas and all of them have transmissions that are
far superior to the Subarus that I have known.

Thanks, chaps ...
