2021 Crosstrek Sport iPod use with Entertainment Screen

I have an older iPod that work with my Jeep’s entertainment system, however the Crosstrek doesn’t recognize any content. It’s been suggested that I get the latest iPod version and the system should recognize it. Does anyone have experience using an iPod with the entertainment system? My understanding is it will work, just not with Apple Play. Will it accept voice commands? Help, I miss my music.
