White smoke after DPF replacement

Hello all,

I’ve just recently had the DPF replaced at around 200,000km on my Subaru forester Turbo Diesel 2011. As the DPF light was flashing.

Since replacing the DPF I have noticed a lot of white smoke has been appearing from the exhausts especially in the lower gears. With this smoke there is also a burning smell whenever I come to a stop.

I took it to the mechanic where they found DPF back pressure to be 2Kpa at idle, with 65% soot accumulation. They fixed this bringing the DPF back pressure to 0Kpa with under 10% soot accumulation. I then got the car back and after a few days the car began to produce white smoke again.

So I was wondering if anyone has ran into this problem before and if so are there any solutions to this problem?

Thanks in advance.

Likely from Australia? What are the recorded faults?
Fault codes from the "mechanic" or do you have an OBD II reader?
Using high quality fuel correct?

Diesel Turbo 4, 2.0L EE20Z engine code

Engine has Common Rail fuel system and VGT turbine. Engine versions compliant with Euro 4 and Euro 5 emission standards available.

This is an interesting read

Torque Pro with the Extended/European OBD (E-OBD) parameters relating to PDF
FreSSM is another diagnostic tool
ROMRaider is another Subaru tool used in the same purpose. Android tool "Car Scanner" to monitor DPF
Screen recording tools are a must to keep the eyes on the road, not the screen.

More expensive tools can force a regeneration. IE: VXDIAG Subaru SSM-III Multi Diagnostic Tool

Yes is car is from Australia. I haven’t got the fault codes as of yet. Car is currently at fuel injection specialist. They are leaning towards it being an after market DPF or injectors saying that the motor may have to come out for further testing on injectors. I use standard fuel as well.

I can also get hold of an OBD II reader when I get the car back.

Further testing ? The shop should be able to read the injection open and close times, measure the exhaust pressure without removing the engine. One large challenge is the soot these engines make within the intake, EGR and exhaust.
Quality oil is a must, quality fuel and attempt a regeneration while driving the Subaru but it needs a setup and highway drive.

Fuel injectors have tested fine on computer so I’ll see what further testing and codes I can get. But I’ll get back to you soon. Thank you for all the help and I’ll take a look at the above post.

Monitor and Manage DPF

Torque Pro paid version is being used
PIDS copied from above website:

Soot accumulation ratio
– PID 22114d, unit %, Max 100, Min 0, equation:

DPF Regen cycle on
– PID 22125b

DPF temperature (estimated)
- PID 22114c, unit °C, Max 800, Min 0, equation: A*5-40

Distance since last regen
– PID 221156, unit km, equation A*256+B

DPF Regen Count
– PID 221157, equation A*256+B

With these PIDs the engine management system can be viewed with a minimal cost.
