Is it common to hear an older Ford power steering whining noise on a 2021 crosstreck.
2 litre when taking off from a stop? It's extremely noticable all the time. I'd like to have a proper idea of what I'm dealing with before taking to my dealership. I'm still under Subaru warranty.
Thank you in advance for help!

I have an old ford and if i heard that PS noise in a 2021 coming from the transmission, i would get it in a shop ASAP. it's still under the 36 month warranty? you must have bought it right before Xmas of 2021.

My 2006 impreza has this noise coming from the 5 speed manual at 245K miles, not as loud as the Ford, but i am keeping an eye on it and deciding whether to fix or replace the car. A 5 speed rebuild is approx $1300. 2 years ago, probly more now.

As to why it's making that noise, you didn't say which trans you have but if it's AT, a CVT, most likely the Torque converter. If it's the 5 speed manual, one of the shaft bearings, extremely dirty gear oil or low gear oil. this oil should have been changed no later than 50K miles.

Assuming of course it is the trans, could be something else and noise is just traveling back and appearing to come from transmission tunnel

one other thing, if it's a 5 speed, and the noise only happens when you depress the clutch pedal, and goes away immediately when you release, then throw out bearing on the clutch is bad.
fix is a full clutch replacement as it makes no sense to drop the transmission only to put old clutch parts back in

My apologies! It's a CVT that I have and with 49k miles or 82 km, with extended powertrain Subaru warranty. I'm having Subaru investigate it! So far the fluid is at correct level. They did what they called a tech diagnostic along with audio recording,so it was told to me by servicing at the dealership. They said to wait for a further update the status. Expecting to have further update from dealership by Friday latest.
Except for the groaning sound the CVT operates normal. Thanks for the input potentials
(Foot note): Would have bought an old F**d if I wanted unnecessary attention.

could be chain slip if it's groaning, this is the cvt "metal drive belt" that rides on the vaiable pulleys

i got our old f150 running and driving like new after it sat in a field for 10 years, birds and mice nested in it. Cost a few tousand dollars and some time. on a new car, a few thousand dollars won't cover the repair on much

Update on the groaning transmission in my 21 Crosstrek. Subaru dealer has ordered a module for the transmission and are going to do a service and fluid change come to the 17th of this December. Will send that further update after getting the car back. Hoping this ends my difficulties with the transmission.

Valve body?

the subaru CVT doesn't have a filter? unless they put one in in the last few years, but i doubt it. there is a fine-mesh metal screen that catches large particles, but it's not a typical service item

and a valve body failure means a solenoid valve failed, which would throw a very specific code. So it sounds like they're doing " try-agnostics", never a good thing.

i would print up up the service bulleting i linked, hand it to the service manager, and ask " did you check this?"

I'm in agreement with your statement. Would you please send a file or pdf attachment. It didn't show up on your message. Or maybe send me information on where to see the service bulletin. Where I could Google said S.B.
Thanks for helping confirm my suspicions on what feels like I'm they're being placating me so I go away.

just click on the link above in blue, opens an online PDF. in the PDF header bar, click on the print icon and print it off. if it's not opening, you probably have a pop up blocker enabled

or, do a search for " service bulletin NUMBER: 16-132-20R " . this is from the governmental national highway traffic safety association, a government bureau i think

I appreciate what subaru has done with their cars, you get Toyota longevity without the toyota price, but for me i prefer their manual transmissions and 4 cylinder engines. I don't think i would pick up anything made after 2019 either.

Thank you for valued input. I showed service manager the S.B. They kept the car for a day and a half so that they could replace an electronic valve body and strainer in the CVT let's sit overnight for the new silicone to seal properly. As per normal they also installed OEM CVT fluid this morning and took it for a road test and diagnostic reset. Seems to have corrected the issue I had. Thank goodness for the extended warranty I had purchased, as I don't know what it would have cost otherwise then a free repair if you don't count the extended warranty cost. Just a quick note that Subaru has come across this problem as shown in the service bulletin. I'm hoping my mileage will improve with better shifting ish with CVT.

I'm still not totally sold on a CVT versus a real transmission.
Just a post note.

See Post #8....like I said. And I can tell you what it would have cost. Two Thousand and a few dollars. Valve body is a maint item at 100k to 150k miles or so. Good on you to get the extended warranty, I preach that all the time...some choose otherwise.

I am also not sold on CVT vs....what do you mean by "real transmission" specifically?

An automatic transmission like what I had in my RAV4 or any other automatic vehicle I had. Personally I find CVT to be weak and not necessarily as reliable as the real automatic transmission. Also it cost me a little more than 3 grand for the extended warranty. I have the feeling I may end up using it before it runs out! He was hoping I don't.

Thanks...was not sure if you meant an AT or MT. Great news is...you just recouped $2K of your $3K warranty cost.

glad they fixed it. To be fair, a clutch service at 100K miles is also around $2K, a little less. our 2013 had it done before we got it and the receipt from a local specialty shop (non-dealer), was $1600.

of course your valve body malfunctioned at 50K mile, which is dissapointing. On the TR580 the valve body is on top, and not too bad to repalce based a video i saw. on the 690 it's dropping the pan with vehicle on a lift, which is more work

Yes the valve body is on top of my CVT and they still ended up pulling the pan off and changing the strainer, flushing it and re-siliconing the seal for the pan overnight to make sure it wouldn't have any leaks. I am the second owner of this vehicle and bought it with 36,000 miles on it so I don't know how the previous leased driver treated it! Hence why I bought an extended warranty which is now paying for itself.
