Hey all,
So I went to check out a used vehicle at a small dealership yesterday. Everything looked fine, I liked how it drove, and I was pretty close to making an offer. But when I asked for the vehicle history report, the salesperson said they "used to have it" but somehow misplaced it. That kind of threw me off. I mean, how do you lose something that important?

Anyway, I’ve got the VIN, and I want to check everything for myself accidents, service records, ownership changes, you name it. I know about Carfax, but I’m wondering if there are more affordable options that still give legit reports. Not looking for a super basic summary I want something that shows actual records.

Has anyone else run into this situation? Where did you get your report from, and how detailed was it? I’m still interested in the car, but I’m not buying blind. Appreciate the help.

Even if they have it, there's no guarantee that it is complete or correct. Maybe have it checked out by another shop?

They should have a subscription for CarFax so they should be able to run a duplicate report at no cost. If they are claiming to have lost it then they likely got burned on the car and are trying to pass it off and cut their losses. Walk away to a different dealer
