Hi All,

I bought a 2013 outback. I'm pleased with it, except the oil consumption went thru the roof and the engine started banging.

My longtime mechanic will be happy to put a crate engine in it....If I supply the engine.

Looking for suggestions to an honest + competent rebuilder.

Jasper doesn't do Subarus.

Any suggestions? Experience?

Thanks in advance

Mark

Have you brought it to a dealer for a diagnosis?

No dealer near here, so no.
Also, I trust new car dealers and used car dealers about as much as gas station sushi.

150,000 miles, excessive oil consumption.
Come to think about it, that is probably why the previous owner sold it.

Nasty clanking engine noises. My long-term mechanic pulled the oil filter. Cut it open and found metal in it.

My options looks like this.
Price a new engine and add the install cost and see if it matches what the car would be worth.

Sell it as a project to somebody else.

Scrap it.

So the original query stands; does this community know of a reputable Subaru engine rebuilder?

Google and DuckDuckGo find me all kind of options, but reputable..... Don't know...

Thanks for any replies, I'm grateful

What caused the problem. I'd start there before throwing money at it.
Thanks for the comment and suggestion, but the car has 150,000 mi on it, and I'm not interested in fixing one problem only to find 17 others.

Much simpler to get a crate engine and have my long-term mechanic install it.

Now the challenge is find a reputable Subaru engine rebuilder.

That's my query

Dealers are tools. Learn to use the tool. Your most accurate diagnosis will come from a fairly competent dealer and yes they do exist. Just too many crappy ones. Take the free and detailed diagnosis and plan from there...which should not include a dealer doing any of the work.
