Slope Control in 99 Outback

I have one of the early 1999 outbacks with the slope control "feature"
so that anytime I start going down a hill there is a sudden and
somewhat violent downshifting freaking out everyone in the car. My
main "only subaru" mechanic and the local dealer said there is nothing
that can be done. Anyone have any idea?
