Routine WRX Injector Cleaning

G

George Nagle

Drive a 2003 WRX with about 9000 miles on it.

Looking for reccomendations on:

Periodically adding cleaner to gasoline. What frequency ( before every oil
change) ?

Any particular brand cleaners to avoid ( incompatibility with fuel system,
etc)?

Can it potentially screw up turbo, engine sensors or ECU?

Is it worth doing to keep my WRX running strong?

Thanks for your help.

I'm not a big believer in 'mechanic in a can'-type stuff. But I have
heard from sources I trust that the Techron (in the black bottle)
actually has the ability to help keep injectors clean. I got no idea if
it really works but I throw a bottle in my cars a couple times a year.
YMMV

What's worked for me is using a quality gas with cleaner
additives such as Chevron at least every other fillup
and putting in an injector cleaner/water grabber once
a year, usually in the fall.

I try to always use a name brand gas such as Chevron/Shell/Mobil etc as the
major brands have some small amount of "fuel system" cleaner in them.
Chevron was the first? to market a good "fuel system" cleaner called
"TECHRON FUEL SYSTEM CLEANER" It not only cleans valves but piston tops and
heads. Walmart for about 6 bucks. Fuel injector cleaner is generally a much
weaker formula so use a system cleaner. I have used Techron for about 8
years and add it to the fuel every 10,000 miles or when taking a long
highway vacation type trip. When my friends Volvo could not pass the ILL
emissions test we put a bottle of Techron in and drove the tank out. It
passed the test one week later. The best of the lot I think but, I would not
subject my fuel system (hoses/plastic valves in the pressure regulator etc)
every tank or two. I would use it ant every 5,000 mile maximum. eddie
