Manual Mode Problem

I drive a 2011 Forester with a "Sport" / Manual mode. Lately, I can't always upshift while in manual; specifically from 2nd to 3rd. If I start out in Drive, and then switch to Manual while I'm in, say, 3rd, I will then be in 3rd in the Manual mode. It's only when I try to go from 2nd to 3rd in manual that the problem occurs.
The Forester has about 52K miles on it, and I've been driving it for 5 years. I'm certain that the speed is not too low for the shift from 2nd to 3rd.
Anyone out there familiar with the problem?

i think i know y
at times when u accelerate from 0 mph
u were in manual shift and car started in 2nd gear? or 3rd?

i have experienced those with older models
