So the dealership was working on my 2018 crosstrek for its overdue 60k maintenance (at 75k now) and they told me the rear wheel bearings had gone bad and need to be replaced. They send a video of the car up on a lift with the tires spinning fast, to “show me the sound” they were making. I declined the repair and went to another shop for a second opinion.
When I showed them the video, their jaws hit the floor. They said you should never run an AWD like that up on a lift. That it causes all kinds of problems. Sure enough, they determined the wheel bearings were just fine.

But… they did notice quite a lot of noise from the main engine bearing and transmission which they say could potentially have resulted from how the dealership technicians handled the car.

Any thoughts? Differing or concurring opinions welcome.

“Never” run an AWD without having resistance in the wheels. Recently my neighbour took his car to a garage who changes the fluid and then ran the car on the hoist. BANG! The casing of the transmission even cracked. They must have free wheeled it on the hoist and then switched from drive to reverse. Sadly mechanics are becoming more and more just parts exchangers without understanding the principles
