Changing oil filter w/o draining oil first

The filter on a 2021 Crosstrek is positioned perfectly upright at the top near the radiator (drain facing bottom), so if I choose to change the filter more often than the oil, will I get any spillage when removing it? Given that it's located at the highest point of the engine, it seems safe but don't know if there's any residual pressure left inside the filter.

Reason for asking, is because I'm deciding how far to trust Mobil-1's 20k mile claim, but I'm not going to use a single filter longer than 8 or 10k miles.

The claim is B.S. Change the oil and filter at 8k miles. Oil is cheap insurance.
Or follow the ones that I see towards an engine replacement or the scrap yard.
