Hey everyone, I’m new here but have been a Subaru enthusiast for some time now. I’ve owned a few and my current one is an 08 Impreza Outback Sport 2.4 N/A, 5 speed manual trans. I used to own an 02 of the same car and didn’t have this current issue. So I took the factory Head unit (Radio) out and replaced it with an aftermarket Alpine one, when it’s connected to the aftermarket one I get a couple cranks and no start. I’m fairly certain it’s the security system because the light stays on when trying to start it. If I unplug the radio it will start right up. I didn’t cut any wires I just used an aftermarket adapter that I had to wire into the new radios harness. As far as I can tell I wired it correctly but still can’t get the car to start when it’s connected. The car will start right up with both no radio in or the factory one in but not the aftermarket one. Is there something I did wrong during the installation or if I did everything right is there something I can do to bypass the security system to use the aftermarket replacement? I’m stumped and can’t seem to find the solution to this problem but it seems to me that it’s got something to do with the security system in the car. Thank you in advance for any advice or suggestions.

Hmm I have no experience with this particular car, but I do head unit installs as part of my profession.
I'm thinking that if the car runs with no head unit installed, then clearly no head unit is required for the security system in the car, so my guess would be that the new head unit or the adapter kit for it does something wrong with the CAN wiring going to the OEM stereo, effectively immobilizing your car.

Do you have any photos to share with us? The wiring/connectors etc would be great to have a look at.

Thank you so much for replying because I’m completely stumped on this. I’ve also put in many headunits and Subwoofers myself on different makes/models and never ran into this issue. I’m a technician by trade and worked at a Subaru dealer for 5 years. I even asked the owner of that dealership and he said he never heard of this either. I will post some photos as soon as I can. Within the next hour I’ll have some up. Maybe that will help you with suggestions for me to figure this out. I will add the photos ASAP. Thanks
