Car is only moving in 3rd gear

I have a 1998 Subaru Legacy Outback. On a recent trip I was driving along at about 50 mph, and I felt a clunk. After that you would put it in reverse, first, and second gear and it wouldn’t go anywhere. The engine would rev but the car wouldn’t move. In 3rd gear the car will move. And it would act weird if you put it into drive shifting up from 3rd. (Meaning- taking off from a start in 3rd gear and then once above 30 mph and shifting into drive it would feel shaky and hesitant)
