Blizzak Tires

So what is siping?

Siping is a process that involves the creation of slits into the tread
blocks of the tires. It is common on many all-season tires from the
factory... however there are many tires that don't come with siping and
would benefit greatly from after-market siping, as I understand it.

Here's a good explanation...

I have a 2000 Outback Limited and have been using Artic Alpins since I had
the vehicle. They are are a fine tire. . I used a local dealer and he has
been helpful since. Nokia's also are good. Blizzaks are fine while they last
as the tread compound is very soft and wears out quickly. Consumer Reports
does a good job of evaluating snow tires.

Gotcha. Thanks again!

Ned,
How does one know that they come mounted and balanced? The way I read
the website, they are balanced and mounted if you buy one of their
packages. I don't want the package. That's the blizzak with an alloy
wheel. I want the steel wheels with the Michelins. <perplexed>

June

Starting from the home page and clicking through to the appropriate
"package" page, there's an option to create your own package by clicking on
the rim size (16") on the left side of the page. You then get a page with
tire & rim choices. Selecting the Arctic Alpins and steel wheels, I then
clicked on "Proceed to Checkout." The confirmation screen says in bold red
letters that these tires will be mounted & balanced.

Thanks. I bought the Arctic Alpins from Tirerack. I read lots of reviews on Blizzaks and Michelins. In my mind, Michelin won. :)

Good call. Blizzaks are great for the first couple of seasons, then once
they're about halfway worn you're left with basically an all-season tire.

The Michelin's should be good, other good options would be Yokohama, Toyo,
or Nokian, you really can't go too far wrong with any of them.

If you'd wanted to save a bit more, you might have been able to fit 15" rims
on your Outback, which would have made for cheaper rims this time, and
cheaper tires every time you need to replace them.

But I like the way 16" tires feel better. I LOVE having 16" tires.

I think the OB Lts requires a 16" rim for brake clearance, as does the
LegacyGT and some more (rex, XT..?)
Terry - '03 Silver Legacy SE sedan - 36 miles!
'02 Regatta-Red GT wagon 5spd - 23k miles
Yakima / TandeMover / Rockymount rack

|I had my 02 Outback Ltd in to the dealer for an oil change today, and while there I asked him about snow tires. I live in Michigan (SE) and we will definitely be getting snow soon. I had my head set to buy Michelin Arctic Alpins or Nokian Qs, but the dealer only offers Blizzak snow tires. Mounted on steel rims, the price he gave me was $1,075.
|
|I'm a woman in my 50's. I don't have the time or the inclination to buy tires on line and have them sent here and then take them in somewhere. I just want to go to some tire dealer and get 4 new snow tires mounted on new steel rims. My tires are 16" and I'd like to keep that size. Is the price above decent? Don't Blizzaks wear out really quickly -- more so than the Arctic Alpins do? Can anyone tell me anything about Blizzaks? I live near Detroit and will have no trouble going to a tire dealer, but I'll probably have to do some phone shopping to find the right thing. Just wondering about the Blizzaks though.....

Try Michelin HydroEdge. I have run X-Ones on my Outback (99 Legacy Outback and
97 Outback Sport) for years and since Michelin replaced the X1's with the
HydroEdge I went to those this year. They are absolutely awesome in water and
are the 2nd highest rated (by Michelin anyway) tire they make for snow, next to
their Alpin. I certainly don't live in CO or MI, but I'm 3500' up in the north
west mountains of NC and we get our fair share of snow & ice. For their price
and an 85k warranty I don't think they can be beat. Try a set and you'll never
use anything else.

Now if I could only persuade Michelin to make them from my 04 XTerra...

Thanks...

For some great info, and comparison of tires, go to www.tirerack.com . I
haven't used Blizzaks, but I haven't heard anything bad about them, except
that they wear fairly quickly. The price sounds high to me. For my 99
Miata, tirerack quoted me $600 for Blizzaks mounted on alloy
wheels....that's only a 14 inch set though. When I put Firestone Firehawk
SH30's on my 97 Outback, I used tirerack's price quote to negotiate a better
price at my local Firestone dealer. hth...jim
