2016 Outback 3.6R flaring when shifting

2012 Outback 3.6R. After several 10 minute or so drives the transmission flairs (rms rev up like it hits neutral) then "thump" grabs gear. I can't get it to do it when it is cold or first drive or two of the day, or after it sits for an extended time. Gives generic transmission code. I did a transmission flush with new fluid. No change.
