My car has been running terrible lately. Ironically the dealership said
nothing when I brought it in for an oil change that was supposed to check
many things. It was just having problems when I tried to accelerate at 35-45
mph. It would die and then go and it had a chattering feeling some of the
time. Now it has a problem just from a dead stop. I have to feather the gas
pedal because it feels like it it going to stall. It is an automatic. Any
ideas. I am a widow and I know I can be taken advantage of by greedy
mechanics.

If you post your GENERAL location (city/state) - perhaps someone here
can guide you to a trusted mechanic/dealership.

When you say you'd accelerate and it would die, then go - do you mean
that it gets sluggish (speed drops 5 or 10 mph but the engine still
runs) then surges ahead? And from a dead stop, are you pressing the
accelerater, getting nothing, then suddenly it catches and bounces ahead?

If that sounds familiar, I just had the Oxygen sensor replaced on my '01
Forester Automatic. I was told on this group that it doesn't always show
up on a scan and that was the case. They had to manually check it. They
replaced it the other day and so far, so good.

I am beginning to think the O2 sensor should be a swap out part like an oil
filter or lightbulb.

Just pick one up at the grocery store once a month or something.

Those things fail a lot. And always seem to confuse the driver and the
friggin shops.

(Yeah, I'd bet a doughnut on it being the O2 sensor as well.)

Never had an O2 sensor fail in potbelly 400,000 miles and 3 vehicles.
I wonder if something is on the edge and a new sensor just pull it
back for awhile.

Does anyone reading here have a suggestion for a mechanic or different
dealership to send this nice lady to?

If no help here, try posting at www.ultimatesubaru.net .
