I getting a CEL and the fuel guage isn't responding. Any thoughts?

And in answer to questions about the gas cap...the tank was 1/2 full and gas
cap was on correctly.

I have a similar problem. My fuel guage isn't accurate, at 300kms it tells
me I only have 1/4 tank, and the low fuel light comes on at 390kms. Yet
when I fuel up it will fill in 30 litres or less on a 60 litre tank, and
I've driven it with the low fuel light on until 530kms just to make sure my
car hadn't turned into a gas guzzler. Took it to Subaru initially and they
told me there are 2 sensors in your fuel tank. One is for full to half
tank, the other half to empty. If they contradict each other meaning one or
both faulty sensor, a CEL willl light up (which is probably your CEL
problem), which they said was odd for my car as the CEL didn't light up.
Mine goes back on tues with all my milage/fuel/tank levels so they beetter
fix it then.

sounds like a trip to the dealer... electrical in nature.

I have a 99 Legacy 95K miles. Fill the tank gauge reads full. Then 38 miles
later the gauge falls to 1/2 then pops up again but not full. At that point
the CEL comes on for about 100miles. Then goes off. Gauge reads low. Fill
the tank and the cycle repeats.

Dealer said it's the sending units (2) in tank. Now here come the
unbelievable part. The estimated cost for this simple repair. $400 for the
sending units and $100 for the labor. So looking for other solution and
using the odometer for when to fill the tank.
