Stereo software update

I bought a used 2018 Forrester. I love the car but can not use car play or apple play. It’s not showing even when I use apple certified cables. I have software version 215 already installed. I want to avoid replacing the unit and lose lunction of the buttons on the steering wheel. The dealer says it won’t work.

He may be wrong on the buttons. I replaced the head unit on my 2015 Impreza and all the buttons functioned normally. On newer cars the buttons may be standardized via canbus. This is a maybe but all my vehicles are. Proceed with caution that you do not have control over some functions such as your heating and cooling controls.
