Last evening we got in to car to go out to dinner. The car was in the garage. When I closed the drivers side door from inside I hear the sound of breaking glass. The rear window had shattered. There was no apparent previous damage to the window. The door lift hag bee sticking occasionally but was working perfectly a day ago. Any thoughts on the spontaneous shattering of the rea window/

I just had the same thing happen, I’m trying to find answers now. I got in the drivers side, closed the door and the whole rear window shattered for no reason! I have a 2024 Suburu Outback Wilderness.

Yup, just happened to me, pretty much exactly the way you described it. Subaru Crosstrek Wilderness. Called the dealership and they're mentioning warrantee replacement.

Just had that happen to rear window 2025 forester new car. Rear window just shattered

Just happened to us as well. We have a brand new 2024 Crosstrek. Went out to get in, and the rear window just imploded in to the car. Shattered the window completely.

Here’s what happened!

My dealership said that the glass, in my rear window, wasn’t covered under warranty, but they ended up replacing it at no cost to me. The tempered glass did not shatter as it should, with several large pieces, leading me to believe the glass was possibly tempered incorrectly. The glass can also shatter when the glass is installed incorrectly. When the glass expands, in the heat, there should be room for it to expand. When it runs out of room to expand, due to incorrect size/placement, it can shatter. I’m surprised there hasn’t been a recall. My dealership said they have never heard of this happening.

Your dealer better than mine. Mine said tough luck. National Subaru was no help. $800 to replace.

I’m sorry to hear of your bad experience with this. My dealership almost didn’t, cover it. They said they would make an exception, after I pointed out all the abnormalities about how it broke. There was no doubt in my mind that the window was defective. Rear windows do not just spontaneously shatter when you close your front drivers door. I decided to post on here, to raise awareness, in hopes that Subaru will address this issue. I’m sure it is more common than they would like to admit. Perhaps a recall is in order, or, if nothing else, an audit of the manufacturing and testing of these windows.
