Replaced the gasket around the oil pump, and the horrible clattering noise
went away.

The oil pressure was GREAT until this morning. I removed the dipstick to
check the level, the level was fine, but after replacing the dipstick the
level on the guage dropped and got lower throughout the day...

Car's running great, except for that. Oh, it was about 10 degrees warmer
today than it has been, ~64 F.

What wt oil are you running? Oil sort of turns to grease at really
cold temperatures. Also been told a cheap oil filter, think Fram, can
produce a drop in oil pressure.

10W30, IIRC.

As far as the Fram filter...er...I gotta go to AutoZone....

Thirty year old car. I would guess the dipstick is worn out and he needs
a new one ;)

20. Actually a nice car, except the rust is creeping up...

Ooops my math is bad.

Reminded today of old Chevy I kept around for the kids. In a 6 month
period it only had 60 miles on it. Figured insurance was costing
$10/mile. Got rid of it.

I think what JiKy said about the Fram filters might have a bearing too,
although I don't use the 'cheap' ones, but AutoZone was selling a
'special' with 5 qts oil and a Fram ToughGard thrown in free.

I noticed the oil p on my Supra was lower than usual, and I used the same
combination on that car as well. Didn't have that issue with Bosch or OEM
Toyota filters. I've been using Frams on the Suby since anything else is
about 1/5 the cash value of the car! ;0

I guess I'll get a better filter next time...

And don't forget to check the "oil pisser switch" -a bad sender
(leaking) is not at all uncommon.

I took a look at all that when I did the gasket. Looked OK.

I think the Fram filter is the culprit, but I just changed the oil before
the 'season' started and have 2,000 more miles to go! ;)

oil, filter and switch is a lot cheaper than an engine.

EA81 or EA82?

Had to ask. 82, I think. 1.8L SOHC TBI.

That makes it an EA82. In your original post I thought the
temperature was a minus 64 degrees. Had a hard time believing
anywhere in the world is that cold at this time of year. Check the
wire that runs to the pressure sender. Thinking it is secured to the
oil dipstick tube. Maybe it broke or something when you checked the
oil level. Yeah, a really long shot. But if the "lifters" aren't
clattering this alone means you still have decent oil pressure.

I disconnected it when I did the gasket, drove two days without it and
then reconnected it. Oil p was good until I removed the dipstick! Like
'breaking a bubble' or something!

Let's not talk about clacking...!
