Full size Subaru

I take it you haven't driven a 4cyl turbo Subaru lately?

Look here for Subarus:

And here for Caprices:

More Subarus here:

If you want to play too, a friend of mine is selling this beast:

Sorry, I don't do tiny URLs.
No. I don't have a turbo. I didn't think they put the turbo engine in a
regular Legacy.

Note that the way they rate the HP is different now. The GT appears
to have more.

However I think the numbers I found for the Chev were
likely today's numbers. They seem a bit low to the numbers
I remember people tossing around at the time.

I have a friend with a '70 Olds 455 which in its day
claimed to have 550 HP. Today the number is quoted as
375.

Your reference also talks about another factor which is drivetrain
losses. FWD cars with less HP can accelerate more quickly because
there's actually fewer losses and more HP at the wheel than RWD.
AWD or 4WD also loses more than 2WD so needs more HP to offset
the losses and extra weight.

Beyond that, though, when I think of a full-size sedan, I also think in
terms of stylish touches. Not particularly leather seats or
appointments, but perhaps things like more footroom, perhaps individual
headphone outlets in the back, maybe more plush upholstery. I'd also
want the front seat to effectively be a bench seat with no center
console. To me that OB sedan just looked clunky even though I'm sure it
is actually pretty nice to drive.

Sounds like you're looking for something like the Ford Crown Victoria, or
perhaps a Lincoln Town Car. I had a Crown Vic for my first car years ago,
an '85 model. Horrid fuel economy, geriatric handling and design, not to
mention downright scary in slippery conditions, but it had torque, comfort,
and size. The current Vic isn't much different even 20 years later. I
can't say that mine was reliable, but it did have 130-160k miles on it while
I owned it. However, my Subaru has gone from 108-175k while I've owned it
and has cost me mere pennies in repair costs by comparison. On the other
hand, if I lived in a warmer climate and had money to cover the repairs and
fuel, I'd take another look at the Crown Vic.

Back in the day I drove small block V8s with little power, lots of power, and in between
(nothing like a Powerglide transmission, heavy car and weak motor!).

I remember it this way: the 327 around that era came in several performance flavors,
maxing out in the high 300s for a fuel injected Vette, and going down to the mid 200s.
So the 275 seemed reasonable to me. Higher makes sense too. I think 327 with 350hp
was a common performance version.

AWD or 4WD also loses more than 2WD

Yup, although it hooks up better...

Yes. Something along those lines. Except with Subaru the fuel economy
would be better, the handling would be much better, the AWD would take
care of the traction problems. The main point would be that it is a
Subaru instead of a Ford.

Look at what the STI does with a 2.5l 4 cylinder. There
are more than a few ponies under the hood. Probably would
make that Caprice look tame.

Having said that, if you want a battleship these days,
you're stuck with a SUV. And you still can't pass gas
stations...

Or a Dodge Magnum RT with 340HP and AWD.

Ditto, except mine was an unmarked cop car. Dark green, 60's on all
corners, heavy duty suspension, dual exhaust on the 351 with heavy duty
transmissions and oil coolers.
Handled great for a tank and as long as I had snows on it, I was OK in
winter with the posi-rear. Fun car on the highway as everyone got out of
the way. Back roads were tough though, everyone in front of me did under
the speed limit!
18 mpg *if* I kept it in OD.....kaching!

My '02 Outback H6/VDC *is* a sedan. I walked out of a store last week to
find two middle-aged women admiring it. It's a shame they didn't continue to
make the sedan. I still get stares after 3 years.
John
I saw yesterday '05 Outback Sedan R (not sure what the R stands from?)

Why not forget the Subaru and buy an '05 BMW M5?
V10 & 507hp is probably adequate for most daily driving needs. I'll never
afford one though, so I'll just keep upsetting hi-po metal mith my Subie!
Cheers

Me, I'm waiting for the Cadillac Eldarobaru...
