Good morning, Need some advice, Own 99 Subaru Legacy SUS 2.5 Auto Transmission.
I need to replace the rear differential, it's going out, whining, making noise. The more you increase your speed.
The drive shaft going into it, has a lot of Play.
What year model Subaru can be used to replace the part ?
Legacy Sedan, Outback wagon ? What years ?
If you have any suggestions, Thank you.

Correct....you really need to have this properly diagnosed. A dealership may be your best bet unless your local master mechanic is very familiar with this brand of vehicle... At this age, I would stick with salvage yard parts. Labor will be high. Might be time for the old girl to go....

Good afternoon, Thank you so much for all your help.I had the two rear axle bearings replace by a profesional auto
shop in Phoenix, AZ. a family business, over 20 years. The Passenger bearing went out, only about 2 weeks after being replaced.took out the hub and brought it to them, and they pressed a new one in. Installed it.
A couple of days later it started, Making the noise, again, in the rear of the car. I thought it was the the differential or Rear drive shaft. Long story short. It was the other wheel bearing. Rear driver side.
This time, I learned my lesson, when to the Pull apart, found a used one, put it on.
Problem solved. No noise.
I love this car, Fun to drive.
Thank you all for your help.
