Chevron gas stations have increased auto-shutoff sensitivity.

To my tremendous annoyance, it looks like Chevron gas stations have modified
their back-pressure sensitivities since the last time I visited British
Columbia. Speaking to attendant after attendant I eventually learned that
they've done this to deal with scam-artists; apparently people would come
up, fill their tanks up to full, and then fill them up some more and allow
the pressure to spray gas down themselves and their car. Then they'd wander
into the station store and complain and refuse to pay for the extra gas.

Now, people like me who want to get a true, properly filled tank can no
longer do it because the dispensers are so sensitive they shut off at
around 5/6ths of a tank. It's so arbitrary now that I can no longer
accurately gauge my gas mileage!

I tried filling up my STi properly by easing up on the flow near the top of
my tank, and the g-d thing ended up spilling all over my paintjob!

How the h*ll do they expect this to stop the scammers? They said that now,
if the gas sprays them, they know whose fault it truly is.

**** you jackasses!

I wish I could switch, but Chevron unfortunately has the best gas in BC.

So.. annoyed..

Will it help to run the gas very slow toward the end of the fill? I do
that and it seems to work. Another thing I do is fill at the max flow
rate till the flow stops itself then restart and fill as slow as the
nozzle will let me. I do not fill too much as that reeks havoc on the
charcoal canister a fuel vapor recovery system.

I don't get it. They're saying people would douse themselves with
gasoline in hopes of getting a free tank of gas? Then rush home soaked
in gas & hop in the shower I guess. Have to be pretty desperate. Even
if that was your goal you could just fill the tank then pull the nozzle
out & spray away regardless of the shutoff sensitivity. Any
verification out side of 1 or 2 pump jockeys? Sounds like an urban
legend to me...

In my original note I pointed out that this is slightly more dangerous and
has already resulted in a spill on the paint (had to immediately head to a
carwash for that one.) I said: "I tried filling up my STi properly by

Not necessarily douse themselves; however, with the flow now so sensitive,
they are more sure that it's the person's fault, and not the pump's.
