Car voice commands

The car voice commands (short press) for phone calls are inconsistent. About half the time it works fine when I ask to call a contact, the other half it just cancels. Everything else is the same: Android auto is active, my voice is loud and clear, the driver recognition is active. I can't figure why it works only some of the time.
