This is a very common thing. I have a 2017 outback Limited and the driver seat has split and torn in several different directions.
Subaru says the seats are leather, but it appears to me the seat bottoms and seat backs are a form of vinyl and tear easily.
There is supposed to be an upholstery shop about 45 miles from me that can actually replace this in about an hour for around $150 and I plan to do it someday soon.
