2003 imprezza wrx 5 speed manual transmission ?

I purchased a 5 speed transmission for a mid engine car build, it shifts back and forth in ist and second with the shifter shaft. It doesn't seem to be able to turn the shaft to select 3-4 or 5 and reverse . I am able to run the transmission with a 1/2 electric drill and it appears that it works fine . The drive shafts turn and the rear drive shaft turns . Is there a solenoid which is preventing turning the shaft to go to 3-4 or 5-reverse . I would appreciate any input regarding same .
