2000 Legacy GT Wagon 5-speed issues?

Hi,
I am new to owning a subaru, having only owned hondas in the past. I
have a 2000 legacy gt wagon 5-speed with 100,000 miles that I just
purchased. It seems to be really slow in first and second gear, and I
am wondering if the clutch is slipping, or the tranny is going.

When I accelerate in first, it revs up to like 4000 rpm, and I am going
about 20ish mph. When I shift to second, it revs to 4000 and hits maybe
35 mph. I have been told that Subarus have short gearing, so that is
just how they are, but having never owned one, I dont know for sure.

When I go up a hill in 3rd or 4th, the engine doesn's overly rev, it
just slows down with the speed as the hill gets steeper.

Thanks for any input.

Sounds odd to me. Any other symptoms or check engine light?
You could have a mechanic check it out.

No check engine light or anything else really.....not that I can think
of. I am having my mechanic take a look at it in a day or two.

Actually, 35mph in second at 4000rpm sounds about right. I usually
shift at around 3000rpm, so I take 1st to like 15mph, 2nd to about
25mph or so, 3rd to 35mph or so... and 4th to 45mph.

Subaru's do have short gearing... although 35mph is pretty fast for
second gear for most cars. Have you driven a manual before?

I have driven a manual for the last 8 or 9 years, since I was 17, but
my last cars were Honda Civics and it just seemed like they had more
pull in first and second, like when i revved high, the speeds went up
quickly with the engine, but in the subaru, it seems like in first and
second it revs high pretty quickly, but I look down and the speedo and
I am not going that fast, but in third-fifth it seems like normal.

It doesn't seem to slip on hills or anything like that.
