05 Outback Gas Milage

I'm pondering the purchase of a new 05 OBW.
The rated mileage is 22 / 28 non turbo and 19 / 24 for the Turbo
I was just wondering what mileage owners are actually seeing with the non
turbo / turbo version.

Thanks for any input.

All my Subaru's including my 2000 Forester 2.5L gets the rated mileage or
better unless I drive aggressively all the time. ed

On the non-turbo 6 cyl. 3.0...Picked up a 2005 3.0 R LL Bean recently.
Yesterday I drove it about 100 miles exclusively on 2 lane roads, lots
of stops, moderate to steep hills, etc. Certainly not city driving,
but not expressway either. At the end of the day, the trip computer
displayed average mpg at 22.8. I'm not sure how accurate the
calculation is, but the previous ones I've had tended to be pretty
good measures of actual mpg.

Doesn't the turbo require a higher octane gas (89) that the smaller engine

Yes, you are correct...the 2.5 turbo AND the non-turbo 3.0 liter 6
cyl. both should use premium gasoline. The 2.5 non-turo does not.
Here is a quote from the owner's manual:

"2.5 Turbo and 3.0 liter models...are designed to operate using
premium unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 91 AKI or higher.
If premium unleaded gas is not available, regular unleaded gas with an
octane rating of 87 AKI or higher may be temporarily used. For optimum
engine performance...it is required (for 2.5 turbos) and recommended
for 3.0 liter models that you use premium grade gas."

How is that number calculated?
Does the 05 have a fuel totalizer or measures throughput at the pump?

I tend to get between 22 and 24 mpg on my 2000 OBW with 5sp. I think the
automatics tend to get slightly better mileage because the overdrive gear is
not particularly tall enough on the 5sp OBW's (cruising at 60mph @ 3000rpm)!
I'm sure the autos cruise at 2500rpm or less at the same cruise speed.

I had a 2.5 non-turbo 05 OBW for a weekend recently--mostly, but not
exclusively, highway driving, but I also have a lead foot. Averaged
27-30 throughout the trip and was very pleasantly surprised. YMMV
(literally).
