very perqueerliar No Starting Problem

I have an 89 DL Wagon (2wd) EA82, recently I came out to start the Car
to let it warm up because I live in a winterzone. I heard a mild
scraping, rubbing clunking sound and I shut it off to look under the
Hood. It was like the Fan was rubbing on a piece of Ice.

I have always fixed my cars for many years and I have experience with
troubleshooting.

I saw nothing and went back to start it and went up to look see where
the noise was coming from. It was only running for about 15 seconds
and it died. It will turn over just like normal but it will not fire.

There has been no missing or anything irratic, it is a nice clean good
running car well maintained, always starts

So I began the process of elimination. I tested the Spark (OK) and
looked at the Fuel line and there is Gas squirting out of the Fuel
Line going into the Single Injector (carb unit) I even tried to Prime
it once, but it will still not fire.

After hearing the noise, I suspected that the Timing Belt may have
come loose, yet the Distribultor still turns. So I took the Covers
off the Belts and they still appear to still be inline and there is no
wear or fraying.

So I looked at the Computer Light and got the Code 34 for EGR Valve
and Solenoid etc..... I took them off for inspection with a Vacuum
Tester and left the Solenoid hooked up and turn the Key On and checked
the flow and everything works fine !

I am not getting a single Fire,. I primed it once just to be safe, and
still nothing.

What I am wondering is what a Computer Error might be like (since I
have never had one before).

Is there anything funky that would happen Sensors with the Single
Injector, Crank Angle Sensor, or Cam Angle Sensor, or anything I am
missing with the EGR system ?

I am at a loss and cant think or anything else. Its not cold enough
out to freeze the Fueline, but I put Anti Freeze in the Tank a few
days ago.

I take it you're getting spark to the plugs. Is it strong?

Check the timing with a light and check the compression. Make sure
the rotor hasn't loosen.

Hi - sorry to reply late. I live near West Glacier and its
wintertime out and been snowing.

I looked closer today. It is gettring good spark and checked the
rotor the other day and is ok. But I did check the Compression and it
was unusually low. It is down to 50 lbs. (it was 150 at 60K ago) It
has been a good running car, is not smoking, starts everytime, and it
just stalled and wont start again.

The Spark is ok, but nothing would cause it to go out all at once like
that.....

Upon further study of the Newsgroups on Valve Adjusting etc..... it
is being said that the Clearance with Hydraulic Valves can screw up
with something with the oil pressure. The Oil Light goes out right
away with the Key.

With the weather I just wonder if something has gottenin the Oil
either sludge or water and cause some kind of blockage in the
lifters....... or maybe the Filter

lack of Oil Pressure seems to be the issue so far

It seems unusual that it would be all the lifters at once and the
Compression drop all at once like that....... It has not been over
heated, and I dont see any Water in the OIl, but could something
perhaps be clogging the OIl Filter ? An earlier Post mentions
something about "oil pressure relief valves". Not really knowing
where they are located, but

I only tested the passanger side and maybe I should check the other
side now that I have read this........

but the part I am left with if its indeed Compression, is why would it
happen so suddenly to all at once ? It hasnt been real cold.....
but maybe only cold as 10.

There was some clattering right before it happened......... iot wasnt
driven like that so there shouldnt be any wear

is there anything that would stop the oil in the lifters real fast
like that ?

I just wonder about changing the filter real quick and adding some
Magic Marvel Mystery Oil and see if the pressure picks up ?

thanks for your comments

If all the cylinders have very low compression - could be it has slipped
its timing.
Hold a strip of paper at the tailpipe while someone cranks the engine
over. If the paper appears to be sucked inwards or into the tailpipe,
slipped camshaft timing is the culprit.

Dear Carl:

I love hearing about "high tech" diagnostic tests such as your "strip of
paper"! The mark of someone who really knows their stuff, if you ask me...

My long term, trusted Subaru mechanic (no longer working, sadly), used to
impress me doing things like that...

Eg:

Wiper was misaligned - I thought he'd have to disassemble it.. he just gave
it a yank, and presto!

Windshield washer wasn't squirting properly - $100 estimate at dealership -
he plucked a metal tine from a wire brush, stuck it into hole in nozzle, and
presto!

I saw him with someone's else's car with a balky automatic transmission - he
was simply pushing the lever back and forth through the gears (rather
forcefully!). Fellow told me later it fixed him up just right.

Cheers!
Fred
