SVX Dead Transmission...Options in NH?

M

mblout

My 95 SVX Transmission just died the other day.... slipped a little for
a couple days...the I pretty much lost everything above 2nd (and even
that's sketchy).
Quotes I'm getting for a new one are $6500ish.....still looking around.

Since I've only had this car for a little over 2 years (only 85K mi),
and i've already got a little more than that into it, i'm torn what to
do....

Any one know any good mechanics anywhere near Seacoast, NH?

I've had the rear bearings done, but that's about it... the car is far
from perfect cosmetic condition... paint issues, and couple tiny
accidents (repaired), slight interior problems, etc. But the motor
seems strong to me. Other than the front bearings, what should I
expect? Could i get my money's wiorth out of another 6K? so far, i
havent.....

Thanks

Hey Spidy!

I've been happy with Precision Auto in Portsmouth NH (436-9192) but I've not
had to do anything major (knock on wood), yet.

Cheers, Ian.

The transmission and bearings are the main weak points in the SVX.
That quote seems rather high, I think you have some less expensive
options available. If you're so inclined it is possible to do a 5-MT
swap, there are a bunch of these running around. Also if you do
rebuild or replace the AT, adding an external cooler is highly
recommended to keep the temps down and prevent another failure.
I'd suggest checking in with the forums here for more info and
assistance-

A much cheaper alternative would be to buy a used Legacy transmission. Not
as strong as the SVX unit but you'll probably never find a good used SVX
transmission anyways and $6K for a new one is in my opinion out of the
question. The front differential will have to be swapped if you go the
Legacy route.

Saw a low mileage SVX transmission for sale on ebay this morning. Auction
will end in a few hours. Price was $299 this morning.
