Greetings -
Just this week I purchased a 2026 Subaru Touring XT Outback in Virginia and decided to forgo the Gold Plus extended warranty sales pitch. I did purchase the dealership seven year service agreement for oil changes, state inspection, tire rotations, etc.; for about 1200$.
Well, while driving said new car (bought with 6 miles on it), back home at night - at mile 61 the infotainment screen went completely green, and then both the entire dashboard screen and the infotainment screen went pitch black for like four seconds. The only light left on was my headlights, so as you may imagine - it was terrifying to experience while driving on highway 29 in the middle of the night!
I messaged the dealership to let them know, and they mentioned that Subaru have had recent problems with their "updates" or whatever. I am taking it to a local Subaru dealership to get in looked at this week - but, the whole experience made me really start second guessing if I should have gotten the extended warranty for later days.
This 2026 Touring XT is all digital - and so I worried about the electronics side of things given that I usually keep cars for the long term once they are out of original factory warranty. The dealership finance office really was pushing the Subaru Gold Plus 8 year/80K warranty at 2884$. I am wanting to know from any others - is that a reasonable/fair price?
Years ago I made the mistake of buying an extended warranty on a 2022 Outback Wilderness at an outrageous overprice and managed to get it quickly refunded because I didn't think I needed it on a new car and that I was most definitely overcharged for it.
Given all the high tec in this 2026 Subaru Outback, and the sudden glitch I experienced - in an absolutely brand-new car - has me second guessing if I should just go ahead and get the extended warranty now - because I'm certain that the price of parts and the tech side of things - will only continue to go through the roof. I have 30 days to get it at the price the dealer quoted, so I am interested if anyone has gotten a better deal anywhere else? Many kind thanks.
