Hi. New here…
Planning to replace my fuel pump, since I think the filter is clogging.
How do you feel about aftermarket fuel pumps? My research says I’d be okay with one, if I stick with a well reviewed brand.

Never aftermarket. They are made in China and fail fast. Why not diagnose the problem instead of throwing parts at it?

I’m all for diagnosing…
It’s sputtering at low speeds (1st and 2nd gears), yet also occasionally at higher speeds (down shift from 5 to 4 to pass). The problem seems to be getting progressively worse, slowly. It’s my daily driver.
Problem started (noticeably) a month or so ago.
Engine burns oil—quart/month. Slight drip. Not bad.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

What car???

It needs three things to run properly, air, fuel, spark. Air is pretty obvious, clean filter and no obstructions, as well as no vacuum leaks/blockages. Throttle body/intake should be clean also.

Rate of fuel being pumped can be measured. Unless it has had a LOT of crappy fuel or the tank lived outside, the filter isn't likely blocked. Still, you can visually check it. (It is possible to replace just the actual pump in the pump, but I'd buy exact item, not "equal to."

Check Googles for spark diagnosis. Easy checks are plugs, wires/coils.

Thx for this. I hadn’t even considered the air filter, which likely needs replacing.
I’ll update…👍🏼

Oh. Oops. Thought I included earlier…
2005 Legacy 5 spd. I’ll have to check which engine.

Is it burning oil or just leaking oil?
If it's burning oil, that will clog up a cat fast and a clogged cat would cause it to have crappy power, bog down, and choke due to a restricted exhaust.

Burning.
So, that’s likely more the issue than air filter.
What besides cylinder rings, if anything can cause using (burning) oil?

Just removed the pcv valve. It rattles when I shake it. This may be the problem. I’ll replace it and see.
