After hearing yet another ad for car repair insurance, I was wondering how many folks really think it's a good deal and not just another consumer rip-off.

Who actually thinks they'll get ahead instead of losing out in the long run?

Do these same folks go to Las Vegas and expect to win or does common sense prevail and tell them that Vegas can't possibly exist by losing.

Confession I bought an extended warranty on my Subi when I bought it. It was knowing full well that in the long run, odds are its a losing proposition.

I hear mostly horror stories. The only one I bought had a "get your money back if you don't use it" clause...and I did.

The only reason I got it was because it was used and I figured if they'd warrant it, then it was likely in decent shape. However, I still took it in to my local mechanic that I trust and got his opinion. It got his blessing so I felt it was likely okay.

Maybe better than a new one because it had had a decent shakedown. With new, it's often a crap shoot.

However, I did recently dump Starlink which I've decided isn't worthwhile. And yes I got a refund.

I have asked the same queston. Notice how they never give you sample rates for those insurances - so I tried to just find out and they ask all kinds of questions and want your email address etc etc, so I skipped out. Like all insurances, there is a premium to pay that certainly cuts into the benefit - if it did not the insuarnce company would not sell that policy as it needs to make money off you. Consider self-insuring by setting aside those premium paymenbts and hope you do not need a major repair for a few years, if ever. It is risky but then life is risky.
