Does anyone know if a subscription is required to use the navigation (map) function in a Solterra

I do not think so. It is all phone based at this point. I don't think there is a native GPS system. If there is, the smartphone option is always available, and usually better. My soltera connects automatically with my s21, no issues. It is also nice that the car reminds me if (when) I forget my phone in the car.

That may depend on the trim level of your model. Check your owners manual for details.

You should get it for free for the first three years and then the subscription becomes due. I use Apple CarPlay which I prefer - and it's free.....
