rattling in the transmission at certain rpm's

Been noticing for a while now that there is a slight rattling in the
shift-stick on my 5MT OBW. It is not so much a problem as an annoyance.
It only happens when the transmission is either in 2nd or 3rd gear, and
the engine RPM's are over 2500. I can get the rattling to stop just by
touching and holding the shift-knob.

Maybe just worn plastic/rubber bushings?
In addition to OEM, Kartoy and others offer urethane/high performance
bushing after-market.

hope it's nothing internal

Yeah, that's what I'm hoping too. Would these bushings be visible and
serviceable from inside the car, rather than underneath it?

I've never done it. I do recall reading that people have trouble with
it, but it seemed possible. Try digging around at both
ultimatesubaru.org and nasioccom . I'd bet you could find some pictures
or a step-by-step.

Probably an email to kartboy would tell you too. Who knows, they may
have an online installation guide or something...wait....

OK - dig around here at scoobymods;

On most Japanese cars, you have to remove the lower half of the
console/radio box, and the console where the shifter is, and they should
be accesible from there.

Not all Japanese cars are the same though. I had a 1972 Corona that you
had to do all that and THEN get under the car to position them.

Ah, the classic Subaru shifter rattle. The problem is the rubber bushings
in the linkages between the shifter and the back of the transmission have
slightly shrunk with age and now the individual bits don't quite fit
together right.

When it first showed up on my 95 about 4 years ago it was the little tension
spring that had finally rusted out. This was 30 cent part and was easy to
replace by just crawling under the car - once I knew where it was suppose to
go.

Now even with the spring, my shifter rattles all the time.

Ideally to fix it you need to remove the exhaust pipe - unless you have
really slender hands.

I haven't bothered to change the bushings - the sound of the rattling heat
shield drowns it out :)
