I'm learing a bit at a time. Found out about the hydraulic timing
belt tensioner, and why it said to take 3 min to compress it. An
aircraft mechanic friend wanted to know about that one.

Trying to figure out what a Valve Spring Stopper is or does, and how
the i Active valve system works. How many main bearings the motor-s
have. Looks like 5 in the factory CD manual, but the Haynes 00'-06'
manual I picked up, that doesn't cover Imprezas, shows a block with 3.
Maybe some older ones had 3. A site that looks like it's an official
Sube one claims All their cranks are forged. It has an 02' date on
top, but 02'-07' dates at the bottom.

Dunno about that, but there is a test to see whether it's good or bad
that involves compressing it and a time duration or something?

All I know is that my car has seemed to eat timing belt tensioners and
even brand new ones tick like there's no tomorrow in the first couple
minutes of the car running.

Does it tick when warm out? I'm learning a Lot about oils, and how
well they flow when cold. Think I read that non dain back filters
prevent the start up ticking, but shouldn't take minutes to pump up
the hydraulic tensioner, I wouldn't think. Would be interesting to try
to figure what could mess them up. Do they leak or just stop applying
the pressure/tension?

I had a ticking from my Impreza when it was real new, coming from
about where the tensioner is. The motor was a little rough, so didn't
know if it was just something rattling. Didn't hear it later when I
had the hood open, and the motor was running smooth or smoother.

I like to Know what makes my cars Tick....))

Does it tick when warm out?

Yup. Not quite as loud or as long.

I can't recall if it's 5 or 6 new tensioners I've had in this vehicle
since it was new, but it's all the same.

Seems physically impossible to me that a flat 4 engine could have more then
3 main bearings. Front main bearing/2 connecting rods/middle main/2 more
connecting rods/rear main. The flat six engine probably has 4 main
bearings.

In the specs it lists 5, and shows 5 in the drawing of the Sube
manual on CD.

Out of curiosity, not knowing the motors, I would like to know which
one-s had 3.

What weight or type of oil are you using, using a non drainback
filter? Did they cause any problems, or just make noise?

It's coming slow, but I'm learning the beast.)). Finding things, and
finding them again on a CD especially with my limits is tedious, but I
Did find a drawing of where the oil flows through the galleries, and
where parts are.
