iPod in 2004 Forester

I'd really like to be able to plug my iPod directly into my Forester's
stereo (those FM transmitter things stink), but from what I've been
reading it seems that that may not be possible. I don't want to
install an entirely new stereo; are there other (relatively simple)
options?

I tried one that has 5-6 stations to pick from, its works ok for
podcasts. Not good for music bc antenna in rear of car.

Search http://www.scoobymods.com/ I think someone has a write up.

If you have an Aux connection to your car stereo, i'm told all you need is a
aux cable and a usb cig lighter connection for charging.

Just be careful of the space at the bottom of the ipod, the 4th gen nano's
dont have much room to have both cables (usb & aux) connected at the same
time.

Will be looking at doing this in my Liberty very soon.

Cheers

Well, those AUX inputs at least used to be really annoying, some years
ago. Most car CD players had them, but they were meant for the
manufacturer's CD changer box and couldn't often be used without that
present, connected via a special cable. A serial cable so it wasn't a
matter of shorting some pins either.

I guess this may have changed now that there are so many small MP3
players people want to plug into their car systems.

Unfortunately, the car manufacturers haven't changed with them. A USB port
should have been a standard feature on car stereos by now.

Therre are units that feed the signal into the antenna, instaed of
broadcasting it. Try;

Unfortunately, installing one of those "Y cable" modulators requires
removing and reinstalling the factory deck. This is a good time to think
about replacing the factory head unit with something more suited to your
desires. The labor isn't much different at this point. But I'll also
trumpet "Crutchfield" for a source of a new deck, I've bought 5decks
and 3 sets of speakers from them. I've had to call customer support
twice, and both times were a pleasant experience.

I'm actually to have an FM modulator installed for my satellite radio;
do you know if I can just unplug it and plug it into the iPod?

Sry. I don't know.
Maybe if you post the brand/model of modulator, someone could find the
specs. Or, since it sounds as if you're having a shop do the install, as
ke them.

We use a player similar to

http://www.amazon.com/Audio-Tape-Cassette-Adapter-
Players/dp/B000CFLES0/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1230833194&sr
=1-2

or http://preview.tinyurl.com/92sbff

The price is certainly right!

Along with this you'll probably want an adapter to power the iPod from
the cigarette lighter.

I'm using a unit which is very similar to the one listed at the
Crutchfield site, though not the same manufacturer. It is installed as a
'man-in-th-middle' device between the antenna lead and the the radio's
antenna input. When the adapter is off the normal radio signal is passed
through from the antenna to the radio. When the adapter is on the signal
from the RCA inputs is converted to FM and sent to the radio instead. I
found that the level could be a bit stronger when using my MP3 player,
so I added a "Boostaroo" inline amplifier which gives a few dB boost.
The whole thing sounds pretty good.

Hi,
Good FM transmitter is around. Don't buy El Cheapo.

Hi,

We bought a Monster transmitter at the Apple Store, thinking it
would be a good one, and it's unusable not only in the Washington,
DC suburbs but even in the middle of rural Virginia. It can't
maintain a good, steady signal for more than about 5 minutes in town
nor more than a half-hour on the highway. It is unusable.

What is your recommendation of a good one?

This is probably too late to help(and might too involved for some folks)
but check this out;
